The new Loom

Meet my new Weaving loom! I haven’t quite named it yet. It’s almost all together- I’m in need of some hooks and cords for my pedals… which is kind of the reason for this post….

It’s a Nilus LeCleric. It has 8 shafts and 8 pedals. It’s got a 27 inch weaving width. The loom itself is about 38 inches. (ha, I measured it yesterday to prove that it will not fit out the door in it’s current state.) It’s serial number is N26.601.20 and from Tom, the American LeCleric guy, “Your loom has a very early canadian issue number, and Leclerc(Francois) cannot find the origin in his archive files, but the concensus is your loom was mnfgrd in Jan of 1960.” Sweet. I got a Hippy Loom. 8-)
It’s warped up with some blue mill ends (no idea of the content) that I am hoping to make some kid lap blankets. Then I’ve got some scarves to make. Then some bathmats with sock loops. Uh, I had something else I was going to do to. hm.

view of the pedals and the current set up. You really need to see the full sized picture to see it in all it’s ghetto-rig glory.

A close up of my ghetto rig. Don’t laugh, I thought it would work.

This also came with the loom and I have no idea what it is…

The box said warping board- so I assumed it was a (really tiny!) warping board, but obvously it’s not. I’ve looked around the LeClerc website and can’t really find out what it is…

Estes Park Wol market 2008

Yup Yup, I went to the wool market again. It was QUITE the adventure this year with TWO little people. Thanks to Nicole who helped me with the kiddos. And did some fiber enabling. I wish I got the picture of our set up. My hefty 9 mo old was in a hiking backpack (which makes me take up a lot of room) and T in the Stroller or walking (depending on her mood.)And yes, the stroller takes up room too. SO I did get some scowls in the vendors area. But the kids are so cute, a couple of smiles and they usually win over folks. 8-)
What did I get?

TWO bags of shiny. Because I have discovered the JOY of shiny. And it was supa cheap.

A 10 needle needle felting tool. Bacause it’s time to get back into needle felting. And it’s COMFY.

A silk brick from Bonkers. Oh so lovley. I fell in love with the colorway the second I saw it but it was a little expensive so I wasn’t sure. A walk through the animals, some encouragement, and I got it. I figured if it was still there I would get it, and it was, so I did. I think it’s going to be a shawl. Perhaps this one. Because it’s called Lamina.

I also got (but did not photo) the patterns from Ellens Wooly Wonders. Yes I got them (remember them from last year?) I got the dragon and the egg pattern. And already have great yarn plans. SHINY HANDSPUN!!!!

see my loom?

Ok, want to see my loom?

From the front. The cone at the bottom Is what I’m thinking of for my next project.

from the side. She’s a bit of a brute. I’m thinking I may turn her around so the front is to the back wall so I
can weave, watch kiddos, and still have some room.

Her name is Judith. While I am still figuring out a name for my spinning wheel, the loom told me her name lout and clear. When I first got it I called Gillmore to see if I could get more heddles. I talked to them a bit and found out that the loom is REALLY old. Like over 50 years. Ok so that’s not REALLY old but it’s old. Turns out that ‘back then’ Gillmore made all their looms custom. SO this loom was made for someone to be just the way it is!I had a dream that as I was moving it I found that on the leg was the name Judith (Pierce, I think) and a date. I don’t even remember the date. I looked all over the loom hoping that my eye caught the name somewhere and kept it in my subconscious but no luck, I just made it up. But she’s Judith.

She had been in storage for a number of years when I got her and then I had her in storage for about 2 years so she had some grime. I spend most of the morning an a bottle of Murphy’s oil soap and she looks MUCH better. She could STILL use some work though

WEAVE!!

I finally pulled my weaving loom out of storage. It’s been in the garage for two years, and before that I know I didn’t do too much for about 9 months. It’s been very patiently waiting for me. I tried selling it but had no takers. So I guess it’s a sign, unpack it and get it back to work!
It’s a 45 inch 4 harness 6 pedal Gillmore loom. It’s a big ole honking thing. But it looks like it’s mine for a while so I might as well use it.
Maybe I will do a baby blanket as a first project.

In a perfect world, I would have a 36 inch 8 harness loom.

Boy, I really miss weaving. I learned about the same time I learned to spin (about 12).

Shop meh Etsy!

I just finished a big ole update on my etsy shop. With more to come soon. I hope. He he he. Go buy. 8-)

Getting cold..

So much for project monogamy with Dave’s gloves. I took them to church and worked on them while The Dave drove (rare occurrence) and got one done. Tweaked the pattern a bit, and started on the other.

Then got distracted. 8-) I was trying to clean up my crafting studio some and decided to make some ‘kitchen sink’ batts. And then with the resulting yarn I made Tiny a hat. It’s been cold and we are trying to walk more. And since her hands got cold and I still had more yarn I might as well make her some mittens. They are almost done. And I need some sort of head cover too. So I started spinning up a batt I had purchased.

And then I finally started decorating my belly casts.

I think this is the biggest reason I don’t like and probably won’t use Ravelry. Aside from the fact that I do more (oh way much more) than just knit, I’m way to free spirited to have things ‘in cue’. I work on what I want, I change my mind when I want, and sometimes I go some complete other direction.
Now Craftster.org. That’s where I hang out. It’s all there. 8-) ALL of it. I love it.

Shucks, I think I will have to frog the soaker I made for the sprout. Because he is a tank and no longer fits it.

I actually sat down and wrote out what I am currently working on……

-that i cord for a bag- hand spun.
-fingertipless gloves for dave. the question is will his airless tires get here before or after I finish them? I may have some project monogamy on this one very soon…..
- Halloween costumes. I’m to the snaps and done part.
- Spinning some jacobs fleece for a craftster.org swap
-Just finished a star trek swap on craftster.
-And I just got a new spinning toy in the mail. Want to play with it more but T thinks it’s fun!!

I have a great desire to tie dye.

Done!

Ok, the sprout’s soaker is done! The i-cord was finished at the Mom’s SnB.

I still have 110 yards of yarn left. Which means this soaker only used about 120 yards of yarn. What’s sad is I had to open the calculator to figure it out…. and this was only 4 oz. He he, only. 8-)
I think now I just need to break out the tape measure and figure out what went wrong with the Dave’s knucks. Because I either got the gauge wrong or his hands are too big. Gaguge wrong= easy fix. Big hands= could be a little more difficult.

I keep tottering back and forth whether I want to join the Tour de Fleece or not. I have much to work on, I think I need to make some yarn for my midwife and the lady who will be teaching our birth class. There really is no shortage to stash or reason. I just worry that if I commit to spinning everyday something will blow up or melt down. Maybe I will just be a bystander and if I do it, rawk, and if not, nothing lost.

And because Nicole was asking:

the mess that is my TARDIS apron. It started as a plain blue apron. Because I need more aprons. Seriously, I think now I have three. I decided it needed something. I saw a really nicely done 8 layer stencil of the TARDIS. I think I can do in in only like 4 layers. The black layer is a disaster, as you may be able to see. I’m still working on it. I may throw it across the room or try again with freezer paper since you can iron freezer paper to your fabric. I keep thinking I need to write something clever on it but the only thing that comes to mind is something silly like “I’m in your kitchen, disobeying the laws of time and space.” Though part of me wants to write “The angels have the phone box” across the bottom. But that only makes sense if you’ve seen “Blink”.

So a quick run down:

Current Finished objects:

-The SOAKER!!

-TARDIS apron.

Current works- in- progress:

-Ren fest costumes. I keep waffling over whether I really want to put that much work into them or just go in something cool.

-Husband’s knucks

-Tiny’s baby doll

Current planning:

- Sprout’s blanket

I have one more thing to say but I am so going to bed. Because the AC is on in our room. ahhhhhhhh…..
